The Many Paths to Coaching

During a recent interview for a coaching platform, I was asked a seemingly straightforward question: Why do clients come to you for coaching? I found myself pausing, not because I didn’t know the answer, but because the answer is so multifaceted. My clients come to me for different reasons, each of them seeing a part of my journey that resonates with their own.

Reflecting on this question, I realized that what draws people to coaching and specifically to me as their coach varies widely. But there’s always a shared thread: a desire for growth, alignment, and fulfillment.

Let me share some of the reasons why clients seek me out and how my diverse background allows me to meet them exactly where they are.

Different Roads to Coaching

1. Aspiring Entrepreneurs:
Some clients come to me because they’re starting a business and see my experience in business and startup operations as a valuable guide. They want to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship with clarity and confidence, and they trust my ability to help them build systems, processes, and momentum.

2. Sales Professionals Transitioning into Leadership:
Others are inspired by my sales background and how I climbed the ladder quickly. These clients are individual contributors who aspire to leadership roles but feel unsure about how to make the leap. They come to me to develop their leadership skills and mindset while learning how to navigate this important career transition.

3. Leaders Feeling Stagnant:
Then there are leaders who feel like they’ve hit a plateau. They’ve lost steam and know they need to make a move, but they’re unclear about what’s next. These clients seek me out to help reignite their passion, clarify their next steps, and create a plan for growth.

4. Working Parents Seeking Alignment:
As a parent myself, I deeply understand the juggling act of balancing a career and family. Some of my clients are working parents who are passionate about their careers but feel stretched too thin. They want to find ways to thrive in both roles without losing themselves in the process.

5. Job Seekers Refining Their Interview Skills:
For those who are unemployed or between roles, I provide support in sharpening their interview skills, building their confidence, and navigating the job market. These clients often come to me feeling discouraged, and together, we work to create a strategy that aligns with their strengths and goals.

6. People of Color Seeking a Safe Space:
For some clients, the connection goes beyond career experience. As a person of color who has faced systemic challenges and workplace inequities, I provide a safe space for others to share their experiences, vent, and strategize. These clients value having a coach who understands their lived reality and can help them navigate these challenges with empathy and actionable guidance.

The Common Thread

While the reasons my clients come to me vary, they all share a commitment to change. They recognize that the life or career they’ve envisioned requires intentional effort and a mindset shift. My role is to help them uncover the deeper motivations driving their goals—what I call the why behind the why behind the why —and create a path forward that feels aligned and authentic.

At the heart of my coaching practice is the belief that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Coaching isn’t about fitting into a box; it’s about creating space for each individual’s unique journey.

Why This Matters

This diversity in my clients’ journeys is something I cherish. It keeps my work dynamic, meaningful, and deeply personal. It also reflects the many facets of who I am—a business professional, a leader, an entreprenuer, a parent, a woman and person of color navigating my own path.

By embracing this variety, I’m able to connect with clients on multiple levels, helping them move forward in ways that honor their values and aspirations.
