How I Redefined Fun After Motherhood (And Why It Matters for Success)

Mother and young son smiling with ice cream cones covered in sprinkles

When I look back on my twenties, fun was easy to define.
It meant dancing until 2 AM, ordering another round of martinis, living in the moment without thinking much about what came next.

And honestly?
That version of fun had its place.
It carried me through tough seasons. It gave me community, memories, and a sense of freedom when life felt heavy.

But then life changed beautifully and permanently.
I became a mother.

And suddenly, my definition of fun had to evolve.

The Wake-Up Call (Literally and Figuratively)

I remember one particular morning when my son was about a year old.
After a rare night out, I woke up feeling the full weight of exhaustion, dehydration, and regret while he was ready to play, wide awake at 6 AM.

At that moment, something clicked for me. (after ibuprofen, coffee and water). What once felt like “fun” now felt misaligned with the life I was building. Toddlers and hangovers do not go together. And hangovers last longer in your 30’s

It didn’t feel misaligned because I didn’t love adventure anymore but because the cost was too high.
The energy drain, the disconnect, the recovery time it just didn’t fit the version of me I was becoming.

Choosing a New Kind of Joy

Today, fun looks radically different:

  • Laughing with my son in the backyard.
  • Weekend pancake breakfasts and inviting family and friends over.
  • Movie date nights under a cozy blanket.
  • Gardening and getting my hands dirty.

It’s not about the absence of excitement it’s about choosing joy that nourishes me instead of depleting me.

Redefining fun taught me that growth isn’t about giving things up.
It’s about consciously choosing what fills you for the season you’re in.

And that lesson?
It’s not just personal.
It’s foundational to success in every area of life including career, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

Because when you honor the season you’re in, you show up more fully for yourself, your family, and your calling.

A Reflection for You

If you’re feeling disconnected from the things that once lit you up,
it’s not a sign you’re failing.
It’s a sign you’re evolving.

Give yourself permission to redefine what joy, fun, and fulfillment look like for you right now.

You’re allowed to change.

And sometimes, that change is exactly the key to unlocking your next level of growth.
